10 Best Hiking Boots of 2024

From my 10″ high White’s Smokejumper boots to my trail running shoes, every environment and adventure requires a specific boot. Midweight hiking boots offer a balance of flexibility and support, making them suitable for various hiking intensities, including day hikes.

I’ve put together a quick list of 10 boots I think are a good all around. When it comes to most hiking boots you can spend so much money. I tried to include a couple of the expensive men’s hiking boots but mostly boots that are midrange priced. These boots get my seal of approval. Enjoy.

Choosing the Right Hiking Boots

Choosing the right hiking boots can be a daunting task, especially for those new to hiking. With so many options available, it’s essential to consider several factors to ensure you find the perfect pair for your needs.

Intended Usage

Before selecting a pair of hiking boots, consider how you plan to use them. Will you be using them for day hikes, backpacking trips, or mountaineering? Different activities require different types of boots, so it’s crucial to choose a pair that’s designed for your intended use.

For example, if you’ll be doing a lot of backpacking, you’ll want a pair of boots with good ankle support and a sturdy sole to handle the weight of your pack. On the other hand, if you’ll be doing mostly day hikes, a lighter, more flexible boot may be a better option.

Factors to Consider

In addition to intended usage, there are several other factors to consider when choosing a pair of hiking boots. These include:

  • Terrain: Will you be hiking on smooth trails or rough, rocky terrain? If you’ll be hiking on rough terrain, you’ll want a pair of boots with good traction and ankle support.

  • Weather: Will you be hiking in wet or dry conditions? If you’ll be hiking in wet conditions, you’ll want a pair of boots with a waterproof membrane to keep your feet dry.

  • Foot type: Do you have flat feet, high arches, or another foot type? Different foot types require different types of boots, so it’s essential to choose a pair that’s designed for your foot type.

  • Personal preference: Do you prefer a lightweight, flexible boot or a more supportive, sturdy boot? Ultimately, the best pair of boots is one that feels comfortable and supportive to you.

Types of Hiking Boots

There are several types of hiking boots available, each designed for specific activities and terrain.

Traditional Hiking Boot

Traditional hiking boots are designed for backpacking and mountaineering. They typically have a sturdy sole, good ankle support, and a waterproof membrane to keep your feet dry. They’re often made with full-grain leather and have a more substantial build than lightweight hiking boots.

Traditional hiking boots are ideal for:

  • Backpacking trips

  • Mountaineering

  • Hiking on rough, rocky terrain

Some popular traditional hiking boots include:

I’m a medium/wide. I waffle between the two. The Newton Ridge Plus fit perfect on my narrow feet. I liked the two shoelace nubs because the shoe opened up at the ankle and I could slip my foot in, crisscross the laces on the nubs and tie them off above the ankle without having to thread the laces through holes I couldn’t see. Great investment. Good traction wet and dry.

Features:

Vibram SPE Midsole

The Danner Mountain 600 has the Vibram SPE (Specialized Performance Elastomer) midsole, a brand new technical compound that provides more comfort and flexibility. A co-polymer blend of synthetic and natural rubber and EVA this midsole is more resilient, cushioned and durable and lighter.

Waterproof Protection

We took everything we learned building full leather hiking boots and applied it to the Mountain 600. We selected a specific suede for the boot knowing it was lighter, waterproof and more abrasion resistant than other suedes. We designed the lightweight boot to have minimal seams and lined it with Danner Dry to make it waterproof in the wettest conditions.

Vibram Fuga Outsole with MegaGrip

By combining the SPE midsole with the Vibram Fuga outsole we were able to get the perfect balance of flexibility and traction. The pliable SPE midsole and flex lines of the Fuga outsole allow your foot to spread to a wider surface while the self-adaptive lug pattern grips at multiple angles. This gives you stability when hiking on rocky terrain or scree. The entire outsole is injected with Vibram’s Megagrip rubber for grip on wet and dry terrain.

This is my first Adidas shoes which I bought to replace a worn out Nike basketball sneakers. I was surprised when I put it on. I walked around in it on mild terrain and it felt very bouncy but at the same time sturdy. The boost soft rubber really lives up to its name and I can imagine wearing it all day without too much of a problem. The lugs on the sole also feel very grippy.

I would say the fit is a bit narrower than what I am used to with Nikes and about a half size longer. That should be okay as I will probably wear thick socks with them. The Goretex also started to feel warm after a while. So I think it will get hot if you plan to wear it all day in hot weather.
